Lovely, Busy Fall

We have been meeting for classes for two full months now.  It’s almost time for the holiday break!  We’ve had a few highlights from the fall session.

The preschoolers-6th graders participated in our first Poetry Contest as part of their Composition classes.  The panel of judges was very pleased with everyone’s performance.

The History/Literature class (8-11th graders) took a trip to the Altenheim Community to interview elderly residents about the 1920s and 1930s.  Each resident had a lot to share about their own lives.  One pair of students interviewed a man who was 101 years old!  It was a privilege to hear from them, and we look forward to going again to learn about WWII from their wise perspectives.  The students then did Oral Reports on the 1920s.  The panel of judges was, again, very pleased.

After a busy fall, I think everyone is looking for to the holiday break.  Enjoy!

Fall Classes

The June 15 deadline for registration has come and gone.  We look forward to welcoming 4 new families into our co-op.  It is no longer possible to register for the morning co-op classes, but the afternoon classes are still open.  The two afternoon classes are a Spanish class (for non-beginners, junior or senior high school age), and a History/Literature class (junior/senior high schoolers.)    The time period we will be studying for the History/Literature class is post-WWI, the 1920s, the Great Depression, and WWII.  See course descriptions and costs for more information on these afternoon classes.

We hope everyone is enjoying their summer!

Summer is Here!!!

We had our last official “co-op” gathering for the year, and as much as we enjoyed it, I think we’re all looking forward to the summer break.  Hopefully the friendships that have been formed this year will continue over the summer, while the students (and parents:)  get a much-needed break from the routine.  By late August, we’ll probably all be longing for the routine again, but from today’s vantage point, the unscheduled days look mighty fine.

We have some biographical information on the people who will be teaching the classes this coming year, as well as the class schedule.  You will find them both on the “About” page.

Have a wonderful, restful summer!

New Information

The new information for the 2009/2010 school year is now available.  If you go to the “About” page, you will be able to find General Information, Rules and Expectations, a Newcomers’ Application, and Course Descriptions.  The “Cost” sheet has the new costs for this coming year.

We welcome new families to our co-op.  If you are interested, you need to fill out the “Newcomers’ Application” and the “Statement of Faith” and  return them to us by June 15.  You are able to visit our co-op three times in September before making a final decision re: joining.

We are finishing up this school year with oral reports by some of the students this Friday, as well as a Hispanic lunch.  It’s been a great year of learning and fun, but we’re all ready for the summer:)

Newcomer’s Meeting

We will be having a newcomer’s meeting on Thursday, May 14 at 6:30 pm at 1001 East Palmer St.  This is the building of Horizon Christian Fellowship Central, where our co-op meets.  The newcomer’s meeting will be in the Cry Room, which is the first room on the left up the stairs.

Child care will not be available for the newcomer’s meeting.  If you have any questions, please email  Ginger at gkosobucki@sbcglobal.net.

WISHTV Studio Tour

Today we had a field trip to WISHTV (Channel 8).  A man by the name of Allan Haw gave us a wonderful, informative tour.  He was very patient to answer all of our questions, and he allowed us to watch a live broadcast from a room above the studio.  It was fascinating.  And it was free!  They are providing a wonderful educational opportunity for students of Indianapolis.  I’m glad we were able to do this, and I would recommend it to anyone.  The tours are available for students in third grade and up.

Mom’s Meeting

We had a mom’s meeting on March 19 to discuss classes for next year.  We will have an open discussion where people can share their thoughts.  To join in, please go to the “Discussion” page.

We have scheduled a Newcomers’ Meeting on Thursday, May 14 at 6:30 pm.  Please leave a comment if you are interested in joining our co-op for this coming fall, or have any questions about specific classes.

Winter Term

The students of Horizon Central Home School Co-op worked hard during the winter term of January and February.  We aren’t meeting for co-op during the month of March, but the students still have assignments to do at home for their classes.

The junior/senior high school students did geography reports.  To see pictures of the event, click on the “Events” page.  The elementary students have been writing creative stories, in addition to their composition assignments.  To view a few of the 4-6 graders compositions about their siblings,  click here.

We are glad Mr. Atwell’s foot surgery was successful, and we pray for continued healing and recovery for him.  We also continue to pray for Ezra Williams.  If you’d like more details about them both, you can visit their Caring Bridge sites.

We are planning a Mom’s Meeting on March 19th, to discuss plans for next year.  We hope to have information available soon, so that any newcomers can join in the summer.

January

We are back into the swing of school again, after the relaxing holiday break.  We have made a few changes to the schedule for this semester, based on the surveys each parent filled out in November.  We have divided the Elementary Spanish class into two groups.  We have shortened the class time for the Composition class for the 1-3rd graders.  They need a bit more time to burn off some energy:)  And we decided that we would meet for 8 weeks, then take a break in March.  We hope to meet once or twice for field trips or social times in March, and continue the assignments at home during that month.  Then we will meet again on Fridays for April and May.

The jr/sr highschool History/Literature class is now reading an autobiography by Booker T. Washington called Up From Slavery.  It is an excellent book, and I am learning so much about him, and from his life.  I love teaching this class because it requires me to read great books!

Holiday Time

The Horizon Central Home School Co-op has been meeting consistently on Fridays since we began in early September.  The students, as well as the teachers, have all been working very hard.  Everyone is feeling that it’s time for a holiday break!

Friday, November 14, we will be having teacher/parent conferences.  This may seem rather ridiculous in a homeschool co-op, but we are teaching one another’s children, and therefore have some valuable input to share with each other.  We all know that academics are secondary to character, and each parent is striving to instill important characteristics in his/her child, such as responsibility, respect, kindness, honesty, and obedience.  We hope each parent and teacher comes away with some valuable feedback regarding our children.  Sometimes others see our children much differently than we see them.

We will take time off for Thanksgiving and Christmas, and hopefully come back refreshed and ready in January.
